Personalized Expertise for Moms and Babies

Designed with mothers and babies in mind, the Childbirth Center at Progress West Hospital brings expertise and personalized care into a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The large birthing suites meet the entire spectrum of birthing needs, from labor and delivery to recovery and postpartum, and the experienced team is supportive of each mother’s choice for natural or anesthesia assisted childbirth, with a nearby operating room in the event of a Cesarean section.

The Childbirth Center Team

With in-house obstetricians and anesthesiologists, available options for midwife services and nurses with an average of 15 years experience in labor and delivery, the team is prepared to care for every mother, including those at higher risk from issues such as gestational diabetes or high blood pressure. St. Louis Children’s Hospital pediatricians and neonatologists are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, seeing both well babies and babies in need of extra care.

The Level II Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) enables the hospital to provide care for premature babies born as early as 31 weeks, supporting feeding and respiratory issues while keeping mothers and babies together. Progress West Hospital strives to support its families before, during and after birth through valuable educational resources. These include online birthing and breastfeeding classes with extended access and lactation consultants who visit every day throughout the hospital stay with mothers who wish to breastfeed. The Safe Sleep Program also educates parents how to put their baby to bed safely.

“Every mom and baby is getting individualized care,” shares Heather Decker, clinical nurse manager of women and infants services at Progress West Hospital. “We offer the same support as other hospitals, closer to home and with a more personalized experience.”

What to Pack in a Hospital Bag for Mom

Progress West Hospital provides babies and moms with the essentials — diapers, formula if they choose and personal care items for mom — but there are a few items you will want to be sure to bring with you to the hospital.

  • Your driver’s license or ID card: Make sure you have identification for when you’re checking in at the hospital.
  • Comfortable clothing: You might prefer changing out of the hospital gown into some cozy pajamas.
  • A going-home outfit for baby: Your baby doesn’t need much during your stay besides an easy outfit for heading home. Before you leave the hospital, snap a photo with your baby in front of our new picture-ready wall in the Mother-Baby unit for the perfect photo op.
  • Your own toiletries: Bring the essentials with you and be sure not to forget hair ties or lip balm.
  • A phone charger: Make sure your phone is charged in case you want to share the news of your new arrival.
  • A car seat: Your baby cannot leave the hospital without the safety of a properly installed car seat. If you need help installing your car seat, our free child safety resource Safety Stop includes certified child passenger safety technicians who can show you how to install your car seat properly. Make an appointment by calling 636.344.5437.
  • Any other comfort items: Bring along your favorite pillow or pack a small speaker if you would like music during labor.
  • Your birth plan: Write out your preferences for labor and delivery to share with your care team.
